A deeply human film about reconciliation, forgiveness, and reconnecting with ourselves through the pain of loss and the enduring love that remains within those we have loved.
The story follows Adrián and Ema, the parents of Malena, who passes away leaving one final wish: that they travel together to the Tatacoa Desert to scatter her ashes there. Throughout this journey, the couple confronts the wounds, memories, and joyful moments they shared during their life together, discovering new revelations about themselves as partners, parents, and human beings.
The music accompanies this emotional journey through a soundscape that blends traditional North American instruments — such as the banjo, 6- and 12-string folk guitars, and steel guitar — with Andean instruments including the zampoña, charango, and quena. This fusion creates a unique sonic identity for the film, inspired by both American country music and Andean musical roots.
Synthesizers also play an essential role in the score, contributing an ethereal and contemplative atmosphere that represents Malena’s spiritual presence throughout the story and the final moment in the desert, where her parents ultimately learn to let her go.
